Seeding is obviously a very important step when starting a lawn. Whether you are rehabbing an existing lawn, starting from scratch, or just trying to add some density, Green Team offers a variety of seeding options to help serve your goals and your budget. We also have great relationships with local irrigation companies in Traverse City and Leelanau County to ensure your lawn seeding project gets started on the right track.

Overseeding

Overseeding is the process of introducing new seed into an existing lawn. This is a great option if you have an older lawn that is looking a little tired, or if you are just trying to make a thicker, greener lawn. Grass (like humans) can’t withstand stress as well as it gets older. Some introducing some young grass to the lawn can greatly improve the quality of your lawn. Overseeding is ideally paired with Core Aeration because the holes in the soil (and the cores themselves) help provide good seedbed for the new seed.

Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding (or hydraulic seeding) is the best option for establishing a new lawn. It is a planting process that uses a mixture of seed and mulch and is sprayed directly onto prepared topsoil. The mulch in the mixture is key because it allows the seed to stay moist throughout the germination period. Generally, if the seed is allowed to dry out, there will be a dramatic reduction in the amount of seed that will actually become grass.

Hydroseeding is also a great option if your lawn is sloped. Soil erosion amendments can be added to the mixture that will reduce the amount of runoff due to rain.

Slit Seeding

Slit seeding is another great option for establishing a new lawn. It is also can be an effective method for overseeding a lawn. Slit seeding is similar to planting corn in rows. The slit seeder creates thousands of tiny trenches in the lawn that serve as perfect seedbeds. The seeder simultaneously drops seed into the trenches. As the lawn is watered, the dirt from the trenches flattens out and creates great seed-to-soil contact.
